Monday January 31 - Friday February 4

Paragraph Assignment
The three main purposes for writing are to entertain, persuade, or to inform.  Your purpose in writing your paragraphs will be to inform.  You will write three paragraphs about the unique qualities of three planets you have been researching in science class.  You may choose your planets, but remember your topic is the unique qualities of the planets you select. Paragraphs will be due this Friday!

Use this checklist to make sure your paragraphs are complete!

Do you have:
   A clearly stated main idea
Three details - are they interesting?  Are they unique?
Is the importance of the details explained?
   Is there a closer?
Are all sentences started with a capital letter and do they end with proper punctuation?
   Are all proper nouns capitalized?
Is the spelling, punctuation and indentation correct?

We have discussed plagiarism and had a lesson on original writing with Mr. Schelvan.  Please make sure all of your paragraphs are your own original writing.

Monday January 24 -  Friday January 28

This week we'll be working on two main topics: paragraph writing and India (Hindu) vocabulary.  The vocabulary homework will take the place of our spelling packet this week.

Paragraph Writing

Learning Target - I will narrow my topic and focus on main ideas and use well chosen supporting details.

We're working on improving our paragraph writing skills.  A paragraph should have a main idea and details about the main idea that are interesting and/or unique.  A paragraph should also have a closer.  A closer can summerize the rest of the paragraph and restate the main idea.  Paragraphs should also have good mechanics including proper capitalization, punctuation, spelling and indentation.  Please remember these things as you write your paragraphs!

India (Hindu) Vocabulary

Use these online "flashcards" to practice your vocabulary!

Tuesday Jan 18 - Friday Jan 21

Beginning Wednesday,  we'll be reading "All Summer in a Day" in our Literature books.  We'll be studying character, plot, setting, and theme.  We'll compare and contrast "fantastic" and "realistic" details.

Theme is a message about life or human nature communicated by the author.  There is often more than one theme in a story.  It might also be thought of as a "life lesson".

Be sure to complete your packet for this story by Friday!  If you need to check out a literature book, please see Mrs. Echlin.
